Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially revealed India's intention to bid for hosting the 2036 Olympics during the inauguration of the 141st International Olympic Committee (IOC) session held at the Jio World Centre in Mumbai on Saturday.
PM Modi expressed India's eagerness to host the prestigious event, saying, "India is very excited to organize an Olympics. We will spare no effort in our endeavor to host the 2036 Olympics, a dream shared by 1.4 billion Indians. With the support of the IOC, we aspire to turn this dream into reality. Sports is not just about winning medals; it is also a powerful means to win hearts. It doesn't only produce champions but also fosters peace."
Furthermore, PM Modi also expressed India's readiness to host the Youth Olympics in 2029, stating, "We are eager to host the 2029 Youth Olympics, and I am confident that India will receive unwavering support from the IOC." This declaration was made in the presence of IOC President Thomas Bach.
It is worth noting that India is hosting the IOC session for the second time, with a gap of nearly four decades since the 86th IOC session took place in New Delhi in 1983.
President Thomas Bach, who began his address by greeting the audience with 'namaste,' welcomed the Indian Prime Minister, acknowledging India's economic and sports achievements. He stated, "India is an inspiring nation. The entire Olympic community in India can take pride in their performance at the Asian Games." Bach also emphasized the importance of including e-sports in the Olympic program, highlighting the need to embrace the mindset of young individuals and empower them.
During a press conference held on the preceding Friday, Bach announced that cricket would be added to the 2028 Olympics due to its increasing global popularity. He also mentioned the successful hosting of the current Cricket World Cup in India. PM Modi commended the IOC's decision and expressed gratitude for including cricket, one of India's most beloved sports, in the Olympics.
PM Modi emphasized India's readiness to host significant global events, citing the country's capacity, logistics, and infrastructure as suitable for hosting the Olympics.
