Elon Musk, the visionary CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, announced that his artificial intelligence (AI) startup xAI will release its AI chatbot Grok as open source later this week. The news was revealed on Monday when Musk responded to a comment on X (formerly Twitter), stating that Sam Altman-led OpenAI is not living up to its name.
Musk's tweet on X read, "This week, @xAI will open-source Grok."
In response to a user's comment suggesting OpenAI should follow suit, Musk controversially replied, "OpenAI is a lie."
Recently, Musk initiated legal action against Sam Altman, the creator of ChatGPT and CEO of OpenAI, alleging breaches of their original contractual agreements concerning artificial intelligence.
OpenAI retaliated against Musk's lawsuit, asserting that discussions about a for-profit structure to advance their mission were misconstrued by Musk, who either wanted a merger with Tesla or full control. Musk later expressed willingness to drop the lawsuit if OpenAI changed its name to 'ClosedAI'.
Last year, xAI expanded Grok's reach to India and 46 other countries, including Australia, Canada, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Singapore. Presently, the chatbot is exclusively available to subscribers of X Premium+, the platform's top-tier subscription. Access to Grok AI (beta) has already been extended to Premium+ subscribers in the US.
