In a significant acknowledgment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has commended the notable progress witnessed in Manipur, attributing it to the timely and concerted efforts of both the central and state governments to address the longstanding strife in the region. Speaking to the Assam Tribune newspaper, PM Modi underscored the effective intervention by the Government of India and the Government of Manipur, which has led to tangible improvements in the state's situation. Emphasizing the dedication of resources and administrative machinery, PM Modi reiterated his commitment to resolving the conflict that has plagued Manipur.
Highlighting the proactive role of Home Minister Amit Shah during the peak of the conflict, PM Modi noted that Shah's presence in Manipur and extensive consultations with various stakeholders, totaling over 15 meetings, have been instrumental in facilitating resolution efforts.
"The central government, in tandem with the state administration, has consistently provided support and assistance as required," stated PM Modi. He also outlined ongoing relief and rehabilitation measures, including a financial package aimed at aiding those residing in shelter camps across the state.
The Opposition's criticism of the government's handling of the Manipur situation has been met with PM Modi's assertion of the government's commitment to restoring peace. Last year, amid mounting pressure, PM Modi addressed Parliament, reaffirming the nation's solidarity with Manipur and underscoring collaborative efforts between the Centre and the state government. The ethnic clashes between the Kukis and Meiteis, which erupted in May last year, have claimed nearly 200 lives and exacerbated tensions in Manipur. The violence stemmed from the organizing of a 'Tribal Solidarity March' in protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, escalating into a protracted conflict.
As the situation gradually stabilizes, PM Modi's recognition of the progress achieved in Manipur serves as a testament to the government's commitment to peace and stability in the region. The concerted efforts undertaken underscore the collective resolve to address the underlying grievances and foster a climate of reconciliation and progress in Manipur.
