Indian mural art is set to find a new international canvas as a senior artist from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) travels to France under a prestigious global cultural exchange programme. Prof. Suresh K. Nair, Assistant Professor in the Department of Painting at BHU, will represent India in Paris, bringing the depth and diversity of Indian visual traditions to a European audience.

The initiative is supported by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), an autonomous body under the Ministry of External Affairs, and forms part of India’s broader cultural diplomacy efforts. During his stay, Prof. Nair will work on mural projects at prominent Indian cultural spaces in Paris, including the Embassy of India and the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre—venues that regularly host international audiences and artistic collaborations.

Known for his distinctive mural practice, Prof. Nair’s work bridges classical Indian themes with contemporary visual language. His murals often explore mythology, cultural memory, and human experience through expansive compositions and detailed craftsmanship. Over the years, his art has been exhibited internationally, with projects and showcases in countries such as the United States, Canada, and Spain, establishing him as a strong voice in Indian contemporary mural art.

For BHU, the opportunity reflects the university’s growing global artistic presence and the strength of its fine arts tradition. For India, the project reinforces the role of art as a powerful medium of dialogue—one that transcends language and geography.

As Indian mural art finds space on Parisian walls, Prof. Nair’s journey stands as a testament to how academic institutions and artists are shaping cultural connections worldwide. Through colour, form, and narrative, this exchange transforms walls into shared stories—linking India and France through the universal language of art.
