In a major decision, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has given the green light to replace the term "India" with "Bharat" in all textbooks nationwide. This proposal has garnered unanimous support from a special committee responsible for finalizing textbooks and national-level educational plans, signalling a shift in the way India's history and identity are imparted in schools.
Transitioning from ‘India’ to ‘Bharat’
Among the notable recommendations is the substitution of 'India' with 'Bharat' in textbooks. This alteration aims to embrace the traditional and Indigenous name of the nation, accentuating the historical and cultural significance of 'Bharat' while acknowledging India's rich heritage.
Shifting to ‘Classical History’
The committee has also put forward a shift from 'ancient history' to 'classical history' within the curriculum. This modification seeks to offer a more nuanced and comprehensive understanding of India's historical evolution. It may entail a focused exploration of specific periods or aspects of India's history deemed classical, providing a deeper insight into the nation's past.
Highlighting 'Hindu Victories'
Another noteworthy recommendation is to accentuate 'Hindu victories' in the textbooks. The specifics of how this will be incorporated are yet to be determined, but the idea is to underscore pivotal historical events where dynasties or rulers achieved notable triumphs.
Integration of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS)
In a bid to foster a deeper connection with India's rich intellectual heritage, the committee has proposed the inclusion of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) into the curriculum across all subjects. This entails infusing traditional Indian knowledge and wisdom into various academic disciplines, creating a more holistic and culturally grounded educational experience.
Chairperson's Perspective
Committee Chairperson C. I. Isaac has clarified that while these recommendations have been proposed, no final decision has been made regarding their implementation. The committee intends to revamp the educational system in a manner that preserves and highlights India's rich heritage and history.
